Camping HammocksBrazilian Amazonas Hammock and stand sets are largely hand made by traditional methods. There are 12 operations in the process to make a high quality Brazilian Hammock, most can only be completed by skilled people with many years of training and experience. A lot of effort is put into selecting the correct threads which includes stability, colour fastness and also lab tests to ensure they are free of harmful substances.
The first step in the process to make an Amazonas fabric hammock sees the correct colour threads wound around the beam of the weaving loom and spindles. Then the weaving master sets up the weaving loom with up to 6000 warp threads precisely knotted by hand, this can take up to a whole day.
Next the weaving starts. Between 5 to 20 hammocks a day can be produced on a weaving loom. The density of the hammock and its stability is determined by the number of threads and the thrusting power of the weaving loom. During the weaving process supporting threads in the same cotton are woven in the traditional crocheting device. Slightly more material than usual is used resulting in extra thick threads and making Amazonas hammocks particularly tear resistant. After a role of hammock material has been woven, it is cut into the correct lengths. Hammock clew ropes are then added and secured with extra strong quadruple stitching. Ropes of the correct length are then tied to the nearly complete hammock and the suspension loops are reinforced. For a double hammock or a family size large hammock fringe edging is then sewn on. Decorative strips are woven between the ropes which help to increase expansion stability. At the same time hammock bags are completed by the seamstresses.
Finally there is a quality control process to ensure the hammock is clean and free of noticeable defects.
Up to 100 people are employed and have secure jobs in the production of the high quality Amazonas Brazilian Outdoor Hammocks and controls are put in place to ensure no child labour is used.
